Such a jet-setting lifestyle requires pieces of classic clothing that can be thrown in a bag, provide warmth on the journey and appear elegant at the other end. Six ply means that six strands of yarn are worked together in each weave. Or to be more precise, three pairs are created and then interwoven. To use so many layers the cashmere must be particularly fine. The cashmere in the Rubirosa is 28’s or 28 km/kg – 28 kilometres of the stuff weighs just one kilogramme.

You could make a similarly thick pullover by using fewer strands of coarser wool; many other manufacturers do. A more common industry standard, 16’s, would make pretty much the same weight of garment in just a three-ply construction. But it would rob the Rubirosa of all its life, its gorgeous handle and malleability.
